Working Families Protested Cuts: Illinois Broke? Legislatures Gave Our Money To The Rich!

Members of Action Now traveled to Springfield and lobbied in the Capitol Rotunda calling for an end to the massive cuts that will cripple the lives of working families across the state. The Illinois legislature gave millions of dollars in tax cuts to rich corporations, but now they want to pay for that by cutting services to the most vulnerable people in Illinois: children, seniors, the disabled and families struggling to get by in the recession.

As Action Now President Michelle Young stated, “Legislators have decided to sacrifice working families so that rich corporations don’t have to pay their fair share in taxes. They want to cut Grow Your Own Teachers, even though it is the only the only program in the state that trains teachers who want to teach long term in low-income schools. They want to cut Medicaid, which gives health care to families that have no other option. They refused to pass SB 16, which would hold banks accountable for vacant properties, because the banks told them not to. They have cut everything for working families, but the only thing they are cutting for the rich is their taxes! The least our legislators could do is pass the minimum wage, which would help the victims of these cuts as well as the Illinois economy.”
