Letter to the Editor: Forum: Schilling’s support of VA cuts offers different view of the candidate

When raising my daughters I told them not to listen to what the boys say – since teenage boys will say anything – but to pay attention to what they do. The same advice applies to certain politicians.

While Congressman Bobby Schilling has spent a lot of taxpayer money telling us how much he cares about veterans like me, his votes tell a different story.

When I first heard that the Ryan budget Schilling is so proud to have voted for eliminates Veteran’s Administration health care benefits for 1.3 million vets, I didn’t believe it until I Googled “Ryan budget VA cuts” and got over 25 million hits.

At a time when we have thousands of wounded vets returning from the Middle East, and hundreds of thousands of Vietnam vets growing old, now is not the time to balance the budget on the backs of those who have sacrificed so much.

These men and women have given everything for their country, including suffering terrible injuries in the line of duty. I am stunned and ashamed that some politicians are trying to turn their back on that sacrifice. Speaking as a proud veteran, I will never vote for someone who would turn their back on these brave Americans.
